Now that we are finally in 2021, it feels appropriate to call last year the year of pivoting. Lots of things changed in 2020, and we had to learn to roll with the punches (boy, were there punches!). But one thing that remained the same was our desire to stay creative.
When city and state lockdowns started, I reflected on what I enjoy doing when I’m not swamped with work. I rediscovered my love for photography. I also discovered that I miss writing. Whether through working as a school journalist or by majoring in English, writing has always been my way of making sense of the world. Unfortunately, it had been a while since I’d had the chance to write anything more than a sporadic journal entry.
When I decided to pursue a professional stage management career, I put my other passions on pause. A lot of us in the entertainment industry have a bad habit of neglecting our other creative outlets when we’re on a production. Luckily for my sanity, quarantine gave me the time and energy to pick my old hobbies back up again. And now, I’ve found a way to combine my top three creative passions.
That’s where this website comes in handy. I initially wanted to create a portfolio for all of my stage management paperwork. Then I decided to add a portfolio for my photography work, too. And then I figured- what the hell- I might as well launch a blog while I was at it!
So if you’re reading this, welcome to the first of many posts where I get to share my love of theatre, photography, and writing with you. These passions rekindled my creativity and kept me sane during 2020. I hope that regularly sharing more of my creative outlets will inspire you to find ways you can be creative too.
